Almost everything that arrives in the first weeks is for the baby. The Visit is the box that isn't: something for her hair, a cream for the sink, a candle with its own matches, flowers for the top of whatever someone else just made her, and somewhere to put it all down.
Nothing for the baby. Nothing that needs doing. Bring it over, or send it ahead.
Why we built it
Most of what she's given is addressed to her and meant for the baby. This one is hers, and it stays on her counter after everyone goes home.
The pieces, and why
The Quiet Botanist, Moody Blooms Candle
Lit in the evening.
Black violet and absinthe, with anise and saffron on top and dark musk and amber underneath. Hand-poured in New York in coconut wax and beeswax, fourteen ounces, eighty to ninety hours.
MACHETE, Grande Heirloom Claw in Blonde Tortoise
Hair up, one hand.
MACHETE's largest claw, handcrafted from Italian acetate with double-walled construction and reinforced hardware, made to hold a full updo in one twist.
Homecourt, Cece Hand Cream
Beside the sink.
Homecourt's Cece scent, cedarwood smoke, cardamom and white leather, in a cream of hibiscus extract, shea butter and microalgae oil. Twelve ounces, so it lives by the sink rather than in a drawer.
Inside Then Out, Notes to Self Lined Journal
Somewhere to put it down.
A hardcover journal in beige with gold foil on the cover, from the Miami studio. Ninety lined pages, 5.8 by 8.5 inches, with nothing printed inside but the lines.
The Quiet Botanist, Edible Flower Blend
The flowers, without the vase.
Three ounces of dried edible flowers from the shop in Hudson, New York, a seasonal blend of cornflower, rose petal, chamomile and pansy, for the top of a latte or a cake.
The Quiet Botanist, Wild Pink Botanical Matches
For the candle.
An oversized matchbook printed in a limited edition, with a wild pink on the cover and pink-tipped matches inside.
