The house is asleep, and she isn't ready to be. The bath runs hot with hinoki salts, her hair goes up and then comes down, something warm is poured, and a stick of palo santo burns low in her room. The Quiet Hours is six things for that half hour. Nothing asks anything of her.
Why we built it
The Quiet Hours is an Edit for the part of the evening that belongs to her. Six pieces chosen for their beauty, their use, and the small pleasures of having them close.
The pieces, and why
Cedar & Myrrh, Hinoki Bath Salts
The bath, five times over.
Epsom and Mediterranean sea salt with hinoki oil from Japanese cypress grown at Yoshino. Packed as five single-bath pouches, so the ritual outlasts the first week.
MACHETE, Midi Heirloom Claw in Astral Mint
To hold her hair up out of the water.
Italian acetate, pale green shot through with pink and blue, 1.75 by 3.5 inches and made for medium volumes of hair. The one piece in the box that isn't used up.
Dona, Honey, Honey Herbal Tea
For a cup she drinks while it's still hot.
Sage, rose petals, lemongrass and blue cornflower, packed by Dona in Brooklyn. Caffeine-free.
Kate McLeod, Sleep Stone
Smoothed over clean skin after the bath.
Lavender and chamomile in cocoa butter, scented with essential oils. Housed in a refillable bamboo canister, it's a piece she can return to long after the first stone is gone.
Saint Jane, Hydrating Petal Cream
The last thing on her face before bed.
A lightweight face cream from the Los Angeles house, with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and hibiscus peptides and no retinol. It comes in a blush glass bottle.
Cedar & Myrrh, Palo Santo Incense Stick Set
Lit in her own room once the house has gone quiet.
Thirty sticks of Peruvian palo santo, woody and resinous with a little citrus, made without synthetic fragrance or dyes, with a small flower-shaped ceramic holder.
Good to know
- Burn incense in a well-ventilated room away from the nursery, and never leave it lit unattended.
- Composed to order. Wrapped in tissue with the handwritten card on top.
